Family Friendly things to do in Killarney with kids under 12

Firstly, Kickstart your day with a scrumptious breakfast at Hotel Killarney. Indulge in a variety of delicious options that will fuel you up for the adventures ahead. Our breakfast is cooked fresh each morning by our team of incredible chefs. You will enjoy your breakfast in the newly refurbished Strawberry Tree restaurant. As you head back to the family suite to freshen up and get ready for the day of adventure ahead, you can plan an action packed break away.

Just a quick 10-minute drive away, Kennedy’s Pet Farm is your next stop. Here, you’ll meet adorable baby goats, playful pigs, gentle horses, and many more friendly farm animals. While the kids run wild in the indoor playground, Mom and Dad can savor a steaming cup of coffee.

Exploring Killarney National Park

The National Park is Ireland’s oldest one, and it is packed with plenty to see and do. Muckross House & Gardens are certainly high on the list especially for a family with kids under 12. Some of our favourites are below, including the beautiful lakes, daily tours, and a range of family friendly activities.

Take in the Views of Muckross Abbey and House

Muckross House is a focal point of the estate, and you and the kids can tour it, along with the Muckross Traditional Farms every day this summer. Like many of the historic estates in Ireland, it has connections to the Guinness family. Although it had a couple of owners between Lord Ardilaun, in 1964, the Estate then became Ireland’s first National Park. Today, it is known as Killarney National Park.

Nestled into the middle of Killarney National Park, you will come across an old Franciscan Friary from 1448. Throughout the years, the Abbey was attacked and the damage can still be seen to this day. Even though it lies in ruin, exploring the Abbey is an enjoyable time for all the family. In the centre of the courtyard, you will discover an ancient tree. The Yew tree is thought to be the oldest tree of it’s kind in Ireland.

Just passed the House, on the way to Torc Waterfall, you will pass Muckross Lake. This lake isn’t to be confused with Lough Leane, although it may be difficult to see where one ends and another starts. Lough Leane is the largest lake, with Muckross being the smaller. No matter what side you stand, you will find stunning views around the park.

Cycle to Torc Waterfall

At the peak of Mangerton Mountain, a stream begins to flow from the Owengarriff river and falls 65ft over Torc Waterfall at the base of Torc mountain. While there is a number of ways to get here, for kids under 12, we think a cycle is the best method. Bike rental is available in the town centre.

As this is one of the most popular things to do in Killarney, the car parks get filled very quickly. Walking to Torc waterfall from Hotel Killarney is a stunning route, but it may be better suited to Couples looking for things to do in Killarney. The Cycle is a leisurely one, with signposts and one way routes that ensure safety for you and the kids.

Explore in a unique mode of transport

Killarney Riding Stables offer hacking, trekking & trail riding in Killarney national Park taking in views of Ross Castle, Ross Island and the beautiful views of Killarney Lakes & mountains.

Family Friendly Fun on a Jaunting Cart

If riding horseback isn’t your style, why not sit like royalty in a jaunting cart. Head to the Great Southern and hop on a jaunty cart for a picturesque ride through Killarney National Park. Bask in the breathtaking views and serene beauty of the landscape as you clip-clop through the park.

Back in Killarney Town

After an incredible day of family activities, it’s time to have a meal. Killarney is perfect for family breaks, as the town is so family friendly. There are tonnes of options to choose from for lunch and dinner.

Return to Killarney town centre for a delightful lunch at J.M. Reidys. With a diverse menu catering to every palate, you’re sure to find something everyone loves. Other Lunch recommendations Marguerites, Noelles coffee shop, Bean & Batch coffee shop and Luna coffee shop.

After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through Killarney’s charming local shops. Find the perfect souvenir to keep the memories of your trip alive. As every young family know, you can’t leave County Kerry without a stick of rock.

If you’re out on the town in the evening and looking for dinner, The Flesk restaurant. It’s creative kids menu is one that pleases everybody. Other Dinner recommendations Porterhouse, Bricín, Murphy Browne’s and the Lane Bar.

An Ice Cream in the Town Centre

It is not often we say this, but skip dessert in town. Instead take yourself and the kids to Murphy’s Ice Cream on main street. This institution of Killarney has been there since 2005. Known for their specialty ice cream and cookie sandwiches, Murphy’s is a must stop. The real question is how many times will you stop on your family break in Killarney!
